Is celebrating Mawlid halal?

Scholars are split. Many Hanbali and Salafi-leaning voices treat Mawlid as an unwarranted bid'ah. Many Malikis, Shafi'is, Hanafis, and Ja'faris allow or recommend a gathering that praises the Prophet without mixing haram music, free-mixing, or exaggeration. The lawful core is loving and following the Messenger; the dispute is whether a fixed birthday festival is the way to do that.
